Old Fashioned Gingerbread

Whole wheat flour adds fiber and nutrients.
In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Whisk until combined and set aside.
In a mixing bowl, add 1/2 cup room temperature unsalted butter and 1 cup brown sugar. Cream together until light and fluffy.
Add 1 egg to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well.
Pour in 1/2 cup molasses and mix until combined.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing slowly.
Finally, add 1/2 cup hot water and scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure everything is well incorporated. Stir one last time.
Pour the batter into a prepared baking pan and tap it a few times to remove air bubbles.
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 40 minutes to 1 hour.
Remove from the baking pan and let it cool.
Optionally, sprinkle powdered sugar on top before serving.
