Slice, core, and peel the apples. Use as many apples as desired, depending on how many you want to make. The creator uses honey crisp apples.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 3/4 cup of rolled oats, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour.
Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon of salt and add 1/4 cup of melted butter.
Add 1 large egg and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the mixture.
Stir the mixture well with a large spoon.
Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Stir again until well incorporated. If the mixture is too stiff, add a little milk to moisten it further, but the creator did not feel it was necessary.
Heat canola oil in a medium-sized pot to around 320°F. Test the temperature with an apple wedge.
Coat each apple wedge in the mixture and fry them in the oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot to maintain oil temperature.
Use tongs or a fork to turn the apple wedges to brown them evenly on both sides.
Once golden brown, remove the apple wedges from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain.
Serve hot, optionally drizzling with melted chocolate or caramel sauce, and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar if desired.
