Homemade sauce can be healthier and cheaper.
Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt over the pork shoulder roast.
Add freshly ground black pepper to both sides of the roast.
Place the pork shoulder roast fat side up into the crock pot.
Pour about 1 cup of light tasting beer over the pork (or substitute with water or chicken broth if desired).
Cover the crock pot and set it to low, cooking for 6 to 8 hours until the pork is fall apart tender.
Check the pork by pulling it with tongs; it should easily pull apart if fully cooked.
Remove the pork from the crock pot using a metal spatula and tongs, discarding the liquid and fat.
Remove any pieces of fat or connective tissue from the pork and break it into chunks.
Return the pork back into the crock pot and add about 2 cups of barbecue sauce, starting with half and mixing it around to coat the meat.
Turn the crock pot to high and reheat for about 30 minutes.
Serve the pulled pork on sourdough rolls or hamburger buns.
