Drain a 29 ounce can of cut sweet potatoes that were in syrup and place them in a bowl.

Roughly mash the sweet potatoes in the bowl with a fork to give them a head start before using an electric mixer.

Add half cup of light brown sugar (or make up the difference with regular white sugar if light brown runs out).

Add a quarter teaspoon of ground cinnamon, a half teaspoon of fine salt, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a quarter cup of whole milk (or evaporated milk), two tablespoons of melted unsalted butter, and one large egg to the bowl.

Combine all ingredients well, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed.

Create a crumble topping by mixing four packed tablespoons of light brown sugar, three tablespoons of softened butter, all-purpose flour, and a pinch of ground cinnamon until well combined.

Butter a 2 quart (8 by 8 square) baking dish with about a tablespoon of butter and add the sweet potato mixture to it.

Crumble the topping over the sweet potato mixture and bake uncovered in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, remove from the oven and add mini marshmallows on top, then return to the oven until the marshmallows are golden brown and puffy.
