The Almond Braid is a delightful pastry that reflects the influence of European baking traditions in American cuisine. Often enjoyed during festive occasions, this sweet bread is known for its rich almond flavor and braided appearance, symbolizing unity and celebration. Today, variations can be found in bakeries across the United States, showcasing the versatility of this beloved treat.
In a stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until fluffy and pale yellow.
Mix in salt and amaretto extract, then beat in the egg until just combined.
Add almond paste and mix until smooth, then stir in slivered almonds and set aside the filling.
Mix together flour, powdered sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Add cream cheese and butter, mixing until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add milk and almond extract, blending until the dough is just starting to come together.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured sheet of parchment paper and knead very lightly until it comes together.
Lightly flour the top of the dough and roll it out into a 10x12 inch rectangle.
Measure the dough into thirds using a knife and make diagonal cuts at 1-inch intervals along each side of the dough, removing the ends.
Spread the filling mixture evenly in the center of the dough.
Braid the dough starting at one end, folding the first piece over and then the opposite, continuing in this pattern until reaching the end.
Brush the braid with an egg wash before baking.
Place in a 425°F oven for 20 to 22 minutes until the top is golden brown and the filling is set.
Mix together powdered sugar, amaretto extract, and milk in a small bowl to create a smooth glaze.
Let the almond braid cool for about 30 minutes before glazing it.
Sprinkle with slivered almonds for a finishing touch.
