Combine lukewarm milk and instant yeast in a bowl; let sit until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together bread flour, white sugar, salt, and softened unsalted butter.
Add the egg and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients; mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12-15 inches in length.
Braid the three ropes together and tuck the ends under to secure.
Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper; cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Brush the loaf with egg wash for a golden finish.
Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
