Boil 2 cups of water in a large pot over medium heat.
Add salt to the boiling water.
Gradually stir in 3/4 cornmeal, whisking to prevent lumps.
Reduce heat to low and cook for about 30 minutes, stirring frequently.
Add butter, black pepper, and sliced ochro to the mixture.
Continue to stir until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pot, about 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and let sit for a few minutes to firm up.
Spoon the fungi into a mold or onto a serving dish to cool slightly.
Slice into pieces for serving.
Serve warm with a variety of vegetables or as a side dish.
