Heat olive oil in a large kettle

Sauté 1.5 large onions and a whole bulb of garlic in the olive oil

Add 2 large jars of home canned tomatoes and squash them by hand

Stir in 5 cans of tomato paste and 4 quarts of hot water

Bring to a boil and remove any foam that forms on top

Season with salt, sugar, sweet basil, parsley, black pepper, and red pepper flakes

Cook for 4 hours, adding meatballs in the last hour
