Use a 9x9 square pan to spread the batter and bake in a moderate oven for 55 minutes.
For the icing, melt butter in a heavy saucepan, then add sugar and milk, bringing it to a boil for 10 minutes.
Add unsweetened chocolate to the boiling mixture and continue for another 2-5 minutes until desired consistency is reached.
Remove from heat, add vanilla extract, and mix until smooth before spreading on the cake.
