Jalapeños provide a milder heat and are more widely available.

Parsley can be used as a substitute for a similar fresh flavor.

Pour 15 oz can of tomato sauce into a blender.

Add 1 cup of water to the blender.

Add 2 tablespoons of chiltepin peppers to the blender.

Add 1 tablespoon of black pepper to the blender.

Add 1 tablespoon of garlic powder to the blender.

Optionally, add 3-4 fresh garlic cloves to the blender.

Add 1 teaspoon of onion powder to the blender.

Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the blender.

Squeeze half of a lemon into the blender.

Blend all ingredients until smooth.

Taste the salsa and adjust seasoning if necessary.
