Wash the green beans and cut the tips off.
Slice the green beans in half.
Boil water in a large pot.
Add the green beans to the boiling water and cook for about 4 minutes to give them a head start.
Remove the green beans from the hot water and set them aside.
In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and caramelize the onions for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
Set the caramelized onions aside.
In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and add one minced garlic clove, cooking until golden brown.
Add 2-3 tablespoons of flour to the skillet and cook for about a minute to remove the raw taste.
Pour in about a quarter cup of whole milk while stirring to avoid lumps.
Add the cream of mushroom soup and mix well.
Pour in the heavy whipping cream (optional) and stir to combine.
Season the mixture with Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, hot sauce, salt, and black pepper, then taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Remove the mixture from the stove and prepare to combine with the green beans.
In a baking dish, add a little of the roux at the bottom.
Add the green beans on top of the roux.
Pour more of the roux over the green beans and stir to combine.
Add the caramelized onions to the mixture and stir again.
Layer more green beans and roux, finishing with a layer of caramelized onions on top.
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, remove the casserole from the oven and add the crispy onion toppings on top.
Return the casserole to the oven until the toppings are crispy and caramelized.
