Almond milk is lower in calories and regular milk is more accessible.
Add 5.5 cups of plain flour to a mixing bowl.
Add 1 tablespoon of butter or margarine to the flour and work it in until mixed well.
Add 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 packet of yeast on top of the sugar.
Gradually add water to the mixture and mix until a dough forms, resembling a bread dough consistency.
Once the dough forms a large ball, cover it and let it rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the yeast to activate.
After resting, punch down the dough and give it a good mix to incorporate air.
Dust a clean counter with flour and divide the dough into small pieces to form balls.
Flatten each ball into a disc about 1 inch thick using a rolling pin, dusting with flour as needed to prevent sticking.
Allow the discs to rest again briefly before frying.
Heat enough vegetable oil in a frying pan for deep frying until hot.
Fry each disc until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
