Traditionally, it showcases the preservation methods used by coastal communities, allowing herring to be enjoyed year-round. Today, it remains a staple in Danish cuisine, celebrated for its tangy flavor and versatility in meals, often paired with potatoes and rye bread.

Slice the white part of the por into thin rings and place them in a bowl.
Sprinkle salt over the sliced por and massage the slices until they soften.
Slice the apple into thin slices, then into sticks, and finally into small cubes, adding them to the bowl with the por.
Chop a couple of tablespoons of dill and add it to the bowl.
Add 2 dciliter of creme fræ, 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, and some coarse mustard to the bowl.
Season the mixture with pepper, salt, and a small teaspoon of allspice.
Mix everything together and taste to adjust seasoning.
Cut the marinated herring into smaller pieces and fold them into the dressing.
Let the mixture chill in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving.
Serve on rye bread, garnished with finely sliced por and a sprig of dill.
