Cultural Context
Ciabatta, originating from Italy in the 1980s, was created as a response to the popularity of French baguettes. Its rustic appearance and chewy texture make it a favorite for sandwiches and dipping. Today, ciabatta is enjoyed worldwide, often found in artisan bakeries and home kitchens alike, celebrated for its versatility and delightful crust.

Mix bread flour, water, and yeast in a large bowl until combined.
Add salt, sugar, and olive oil, then mix until a sticky dough forms.
Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let rise at room temperature for 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
Gently deflate the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface.
Divide the dough into portions and shape each into a rustic loaf.
Place shaped loaves on a floured baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F).
Bake the loaves for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
