1/4 tsp asafoetida
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp red chili powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp kalonji or onion flakes
1 cup tomato puree
salt to taste
2-1/2 cups vegetable broth
lemon juice
black pepper to taste
bunch of finely chopped coriander

Wash lentils until water runs clear and soak for about 30 minutes.

Cut 1 medium sweet potato into small pieces.

Add 1/4 tsp asafoetida, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1/2 tsp red chili powder, 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, and 1/2 tsp kalonji or onion flakes to the pot and allow the spices to cook until fragrant.

Add 1 cup of tomato puree to the pot and let it cook for 2-3 minutes.

Add the soaked lentils and salt to taste.

Pour in 2-1/2 cups of vegetable broth, cover the lid, and let it cook for 15 minutes or until the lentils are tender.
