Heat milk to a temperature between 110°F and 115°F.
Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the warm milk.
Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of yeast to the milk and let it sit to grow in volume.
In a bowl, combine 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 4 teaspoons of salt, and 1 teaspoon of cardamom.
Add the egg and melted butter to the milk and yeast mixture.
Mix the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes.
Place the dough in a greased pie pan and cover it to rise for 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and shape it into about 8 equal buns.
Place the buns in the pie pan, cover, and let rise again for 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
Brush the buns with milk and bake for 15 to 25 minutes, checking after 15 minutes.
Remove the buns from the oven, let them cool slightly, and then slice them in half.
Place the cut sides down on a baking sheet and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
