Southern Coleslaw
Prepare a small bowl for mixing the dressing.
Add 4 teaspoons of white vinegar to the bowl.
Add 1/4 cup of white granulated sugar to the vinegar.
Add 1/4 teaspoon of dried mustard and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the bowl.
Mix the ingredients together until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
Add 1 cup of mayonnaise to the mixture and whisk it together with the vinegar, mustard, and sugar.
Optionally, add 1/8 teaspoon of crushed red pepper for spice and mix well.
In a large sealable bowl, add a 16 ounce bag of coleslaw mix.
Pour the dressing over the coleslaw mix and mix it together loosely, folding the dressing into the cabbage.
Seal the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the cabbage to wilt.
After marinating, check the coleslaw and note how the dressing has thickened and increased in volume due to the cabbage releasing moisture.
Serve the coleslaw as a side dish or use it creatively on hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, or mixed into salads.
