Make a sponge by mixing 1 cup warm whole milk, 2.5 teaspoons yeast, 2 teaspoons sugar, and 3 tablespoons flour; let sit for 20 minutes.
Add 3 large eggs, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 2 cups sugar, and vanilla extract to the sponge.
Gradually add 4.5 to 5 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt, mixing for 5-6 minutes on medium speed.
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1.5 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
Divide the dough into four pieces and let them rest for 20 minutes.
Roll each piece into a rope and then roll in poppy seeds to coat.
Braid the ropes together and shape into a circle, pinching the ends together.
Cover with plastic wrap and let sit for another 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 40 minutes.
