Rinse canned fava beans clean.
Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to a pot over medium heat.
Add the fava beans and chickpeas to the pot.
Pour in enough water to cover the beans and chickpeas.
Stir and mash the beans while adding more water as needed until reaching a creamy consistency.
Toast whole cumin in a dry pan over medium heat until aromatic, about 1-2 minutes.
Crush the toasted cumin using a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder.
Prepare the green sauce (zug) by cleaning the green chili: cut off the stem, halve it, and scrape out the seeds and pith.
Roughly chop the herbs (parsley, coriander, cilantro) and green chili.
Blend the herbs, chili, and lemon juice in a food processor until mostly blended.
Add olive oil and adjust seasoning with salt and crushed cardamom to the blended mixture and pulse until combined.
Add the toasted cumin, tahini, and salt to the beans and continue stirring and mashing until desired consistency is reached.
Cook the beans for about 20 minutes until creamy, stirring occasionally.
Spoon the green sauce over the beans and garnish with diced tomatoes and fresh herbs.
