In a bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 package of active dry yeast.
Heat 1 cup of milk in the microwave for about a minute until warm, then add to the dry ingredients.
Add 1 egg and 1/4 cup of softened butter to the mixture and mix until combined.
Add 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and mix until just combined.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a clean bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm area until puffed up.
Punch down the dough and let it rest for about 5 minutes.
Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape them into balls, letting them rest for another 5 minutes.
Roll each piece into a 10-inch circle on a floured surface.
In a bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of orange zest, 2-3 teaspoons of cinnamon, and 2 teaspoons of cardamom.
Spread melted butter over the rolled-out dough and sprinkle the sugar mixture on top.
Stack the circles, cut into 16 slices, and twist two slices together to form a star shape.
Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for about 25 minutes.
Brush with melted butter and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 25 minutes.
