Add 2 cups of pinto beans into the Instant Pot.
Pour in 6 cups of water.
Add 1/4 of an onion and 2 garlic cloves.
Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt.
Pressure cook the beans for 45 minutes.
After 45 minutes, choose to do a slow release or quick release.
Cancel the pressure cooker and slow cook for 2 hours.
Place a burner on medium heat and add some lard.
Once the lard is hot, add half of an onion and your choice of jalapeno or a Sano.
Cook until the onions are translucent, being careful not to burn them.
Add the whole pinto beans and some of the liquid to help mash the beans.
Mash the beans until you achieve your desired consistency.
To make authentic refried beans, keep the burner on medium heat to dry out the beans more.
Add 1/4 cup of warm lard and mix until well combined with the beans.
