1

Empty one pound bag of dried pinto beans into a pot.

2

Add 1.5 quarts of water to the pot with the beans.

3

Turn on the heat and bring the pot of water and beans to a rolling boil.

4

Let the beans simmer for about 3 minutes, then shut off the heat.

5

Let the beans soak in the hot water for one hour.

6

After one hour, drain the liquid from the beans and give them a quick rinse.

7

Add 1/2 small onion and 2 cloves of fresh garlic to the pot with the pre-soaked beans.

8

Cover the beans with 2 quarts of water.

9

Bring the beans to a rolling boil again on the stovetop.

10

Lower the heat to medium and let the beans simmer and boil for one hour, stirring occasionally and partially covering with a lid.

11

After one hour, remove the lid, stir the beans, and add around 2 teaspoons of salt and the optional whole fresh jalapeno.

12

Continue cooking the beans for another 30 to 45 minutes or until they are tender.

13

Once done, remove the jalapeno, turn off the heat, and let the beans cool slightly.

14

Take a cup of the cooked pinto beans and add it to a small container (around 15.75 ounces or 450 milliliters).

15

Add around a quarter cup to a third cup of the bean broth to the container.
