Philly Cheesesteak Empanadas

Cultural Context

Originating from Philadelphia, the cheesesteak is a beloved sandwich made with thinly sliced beef and melted cheese, often served in a hoagie roll. Empanadas, a staple in Latin American cuisine, are pastry pockets filled with various ingredients. The fusion of these two dishes creates a delightful handheld treat that celebrates the flavors of both cultures. Today, Philly cheesesteak empanadas are popular at parties and gatherings, offering a unique twist on a classic favorite.

1

Start by dicing a yellow onion and setting it aside.

2

Smash and chop a few cloves of garlic, then set aside.

3

Chop fresh cilantro or parsley and set aside.

4

Dice sirloin steak into quarter-inch cubes.

5

Heat a stainless steel frying pan over medium-high heat and add olive oil.

6

Sear half the diced beef in the pan until browned, then remove and repeat with the second half.

7

Add butter to the pan and sauté the diced onion until softened, then add salt.

8

Stir in minced garlic and spices: ground cumin, cumin seeds, red pepper flakes, and black pepper.

9

Add canned green chilies and return the beef to the pan, then remove from heat and mix in cilantro.

10

Transfer the filling to a bowl and chill in the fridge.

11

Unroll Pillsbury pizza dough and roll it into a large rectangle, then cut out 4-inch discs.

12

Place a third cup of filling in the center of each disc, moisten edges with water, and fold to seal.

13

Place the empanadas on a parchment-lined sheet tray and bake in the oven for about 25 minutes.
