Flower Sushi Rolls

Cultural Context

Flower sushi rolls, or 'sakura maki', are a beautiful representation of Japanese culinary artistry, often enjoyed during cherry blossom season. These rolls celebrate the aesthetics of food, combining fresh ingredients with vibrant colors. While traditional sushi focuses on flavor, flower sushi emphasizes visual appeal, making it popular for special occasions and gatherings.

2 cups sushi rice
4 sheets nori seaweed
2 tablespoons rice seasoning (yukari)
1/4 cup Japanese red basil
2 large Japanese omelette
1/2 cup pickled vegetables

Quantities are estimated based on standard recipes for your convenience. The actual ingredients used in this video are accurate.

1

Prepare sushi rice (link to how to make sushi rice provided in the video description).

2

Add rice seasoning (yukari) to sushi rice to color it.

3

Cut nori seaweed into three strips, then cut each strip in half to create eight mini pieces.

4

Use five mini pieces of nori seaweed for the flower and save three for snacking.

5

Place one mini nori seaweed on the sushi mat, rough side facing up.

6

Take a small amount of colored rice, shape it into a long form, and place it in the middle of the mini nori seaweed, ensuring it fills from edge to edge evenly.

7

Roll the mini nori around the rice to form a petal, making five petals in total.

8

Prepare the full-length nori seaweed on the sushi mat, rough side facing up, and spread a golf-ball size amount of rice over it, leaving a pinky-sized gap at the top and bottom.

9

Place the five petals in the center of the rice-covered nori, arranging them to form a flower shape.

10

Add pickled vegetables and a thin strip of Japanese omelette on top of the petals.

11

Squeeze the petals together to ensure they stick, then lift the ends of the nori to seal the flower without rolling it.

12

Wrap the sushi tightly in clean film and let it rest for about five minutes.

13

After resting, slice the sushi into three pieces using a wet cloth to clean the knife between cuts, ensuring a clean slice each time.

14

Remove the clean film and serve the sushi with the flower design facing up.
