German donuts, known as Berliner or Krapfen, are a beloved treat traditionally filled with fruit jam and dusted with powdered sugar. Originating in Germany, these fluffy pastries are often enjoyed during celebrations, especially at Carnival time. Today, they are popular in many countries, each with its own twist on the filling and toppings, making them a versatile dessert enjoyed year-round.

Mix yeast with warm milk and a pinch of sugar; let sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt; create a well in the center.
Add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the well; mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.
Cut out circles using a round cutter; place a small dollop of jam in the center of half the circles.
Top with remaining circles, sealing the edges tightly.
Cover the filled donuts and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F; fry donuts in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Remove donuts and drain on paper towels; dust with powdered sugar before serving.
