German Baked Apples with Marzipan Filling

Cultural Context

Originating from Germany, baked apples are a traditional dessert often enjoyed during the fall harvest season. This dish combines the sweetness of baked apples with the rich flavor of marzipan, a sweet almond paste that is especially popular in German confections. Baked apples are a comforting treat, often served warm and sometimes accompanied by ice cream or whipped cream. Today, this recipe has found its way into various cuisines, with many variations that include different fillings and spices.

1

Take a small mixing bowl and add the raisins to it. Cover them with rum and let them rest for at least 1 hour.

2

Take butter out of the fridge.

3

Preheat the oven to 180° C (356° Fahrenheit).

4

Wash and tap dry the apples. Cut off 2 cm from the top. Set it aside.

5

With a small knife or a teaspoon remove the seeds and not edible parts from the apples.

6

Grate marzipan into a small mixing bowl. Add butter and mix it with a hand mixer. Add the raisins with the rum.

7

Grease the baking dish.

8

Place the apples into the baking dish and fill them with the Marzipan filling. I am using a teaspoon and a finger for that. Next to them place the top parts that you cut off at the beginning.

9

Bake the apples for 20 minutes. Serve with the top parts at the top with vanilla sauce on the side.
