1 kilo waxy potatoes (like Desire or Naine)
300 ml double cream
200 ml whole milk
2 garlic cloves
40 g butter
50 g grated cheese (optional)
salt

pinch of nutmeg

Preheat your oven to 170°C (340°F).

Grease your baking dish with butter.

Peel and slice your potatoes thinly, about 3 mm.

In a saucepan, warm your cream and milk with garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until it steams, but do not boil.

Layer your potatoes in the baking dish.

Pour over the cream mixture between layers of potatoes and finish with cream on top.

Sprinkle cheese on top if desired.

Dot with butter and bake uncovered for about an hour until golden and tender.
