1

In a large bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 tablespoon of white sugar, whisking until well incorporated.

2

Add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter to the flour mixture and cut it in using a pastry cutter, fork, or spoon.

3

Gradually add 1 cup of warm water to the mixture, stirring as you go.

4

Add 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and stir until well incorporated.

5

Place the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.

6

Return the dough to the bowl, cover it, and let it rest for about 20 minutes.

7

After resting, knead the dough a few more times on a floured surface until soft.

8

Roll the dough out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick using a floured rolling pin.

9

Cut the rolled dough into squares using a cutter.

10

Heat canola oil in a large pot over medium heat until it reaches about 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

11

Gently place the dough squares into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.

12

Fry the sopapillas until golden brown on both sides.

13

Remove the sopapillas from the oil and sprinkle with powdered sugar while still hot.

14

Serve with honey, traditionally opening a corner of the sopapilla to fill with honey.
