In modern times, variations abound, with toppings ranging from simple sea salt to gourmet ingredients, making it a beloved bread worldwide.

Add 2 teaspoons sugar to 300 ml warm water and mix until dissolved.
Add 7 grams dried yeast to the water and mix well, then set aside for 10 minutes until frothy.
Using a stand mixer, add 2 tablespoons olive oil to the bowl, followed by 500 grams flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon garlic granules.
Mix the ingredients using the dough hook until a dough forms, about 7-8 minutes.
Scrape the dough out onto a bench, form it into a ball, and place it in a lightly oiled bowl covered with a shower cap.
Let the dough rise in a warm spot for 45 minutes until doubled in size.
Dust the bench with flour, turn out the dough, and knock back the gas by forming it into a ball again.
Divide the dough into four equal pieces, pre-shape them into balls, and let them relax for 10 minutes.
Roll each piece into an oval shape using a rolling pin, allowing for resting periods as needed to avoid tightening.
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
Place each rolled dough onto a lightly greased baking tray.
Spread a thin layer of homemade chili oil on the dough, followed by a thin coat of tomato-based sauce.
Add thinly sliced half rings of red onion, a sprinkling of cheddar and red Leicester cheese, and thin slices of vine tomatoes.
Season with cracked black pepper and sea salt, and prick the edges of the dough with a fork.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then optionally remove them to add a light grating of Parmesan cheese before returning to the oven for even cooking.
Once baked, remove from the oven and drizzle with more chili oil and garnish with chopped basil or parsley.
