Toss the ingredients in the bowl gently to mix them without adding the avocado yet.
Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and slice it into pieces, being careful not to make it mushy.
Add the avocado to the bowl with the other ingredients.
Season the salad with freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste.
Add zesty Italian dressing to the salad, using as much as desired, and mix gently to combine.
Serve the salad as a side dish or enjoy it by itself, optionally with croutons or toasted bread.
