Dissolve 1.5 teaspoons of sugar and a packet of yeast in 1/2 cup of warm water; let stand for about 5 minutes until foamy.
In a mixing bowl, beat together 2.25 cups of all-purpose flour, 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 egg, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and the remaining sugar and warm water until a sticky dough forms.
Turn the dough onto a floured work surface, adding more flour if needed, and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it to coat, cover with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 40 minutes.
After the first rise, punch down the dough, turn it out onto a floured surface, and divide it into pieces; roll each piece into a 6-inch long rope.
Arrange the ropes on a greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart, cover with a towel or plastic wrap, and let rise for another 25 minutes until doubled in size.
Bake in a preheated 400°F oven for 10-12 minutes.
Meanwhile, whisk together 1/2 cup of melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt; brush or spoon this mixture over the baked breadsticks.
Sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese before serving.
