Flan de Piña

Cultural Context

Flan de Piña is a delightful variation of the traditional flan, incorporating the tropical sweetness of pineapple. Originating from Mexico, this dessert reflects the country's love for creamy, custard-like treats that are often enjoyed during celebrations and family gatherings. Today, this dish is cherished not only in Mexico but also in various Latin American countries, where fresh fruits are used to create unique flan variations.

1

Chop and peel the pineapple, then blend it until smooth, adding a little water to help.

2

Strain the blended pineapple to remove lumps and set aside.

3

In a pot over medium heat, combine the strained pineapple and 300 grams of sugar, stirring until it forms a jelly.

4

Prepare caramel in a non-stick pan by melting 300 grams of sugar until it turns amber, then pour it into a flan mold.

5

Cover the bottom of the flan mold with the caramel, allowing it to harden.

6

Transfer the pineapple jelly to a larger pot and boil for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until it thickens.

7

Allow the pineapple jelly to cool slightly before mixing it with 12 beaten eggs.

8

Preheat the oven to 180 °C (approximately 350 °F).

9

Pour the mixture into the flan mold over the hardened caramel.

10

Cover the flan mold with aluminum foil and place it in a baking dish filled with approximately 2 liters of hot water to create a water bath.

11

Bake in the preheated oven for 90 minutes.

12

Remove from the oven and let cool before refrigerating.
