Sunday Sauce

Cultural Context

Sunday Sauce, also known as 'gravy' in Italian-American communities, is a traditional dish often served on Sundays. It typically features a rich tomato base with various meats, reflecting the Italian-American heritage of slow-cooked meals meant for family gatherings. This dish is a staple in many households, symbolizing comfort and togetherness, often enjoyed with pasta and crusty bread.

2 cans San Marzano peeled tomatoes (28 oz each)
1 pound ground beef/pork mix
1 white onion (diced)
6 cloves garlic (minced)
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tsp basil
1 tsp parsley

ground beef

🥗Healthier: ground turkey

💰Cheaper: ground pork

Ground turkey is lower in fat, while ground pork is often less expensive.

pork sausage

🥗Healthier: chicken sausage

💰Cheaper: bulk sausage

Chicken sausage is leaner, while bulk sausage can be more affordable.

parmesan cheese

🥗Healthier: nutritional yeast

💰Cheaper: grated cheese blend

Nutritional yeast is a lower-calorie option, while a cheese blend can be more budget-friendly.

1

Peel and dice the white onion.

2

Peel and mince the garlic cloves.

3

Open and empty the cans of San Marzano Tomatoes into a large bowl. Crush the tomatoes with your hands by squeezing the whole tomatoes. Make sure you submerge the tomato under all the sauce in the bowl before squeezing or it will be a huge mess.

4

Coat a sided saute pan with enough extra virgin olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan and add the onions and garlic.

5

Place the pan over medium high heat and cook the onions and garlic until the garlic starts to brown.

6

Once the garlic begins to brown, add the ground beef/pork mixture.

7

Add in 1 tbsp of garlic powder, 1 tbsp onion powder, 1 tsp basil, 1 tsp parsley, and 1 tsp salt.

8

Cook until the meat is browned and fully cooked. If needed, you can add some extra olive oil.

9

Depending on how fatty your meat mixture was, you may have to drain the fat.

10

Once the meat is cooked, add in your crushed tomatoes.

11

Reduce the heat to medium low, stir, and simmer the sauce for 10-15 minutes.

12

After the sauce has simmered, taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning to your liking. Dad added 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of sugar.

13

Serve over pasta or use in a dish like Dad's Lasagna Recipe.
