Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Slice the onions down the middle to create flat sides, then slice them into half slices.

Season the sliced onions with salt and pepper to taste.

Dot the onions with about 1 tablespoon of butter and sprinkle with about 2 tablespoons of water.

Cover the baking dish and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, uncover the onions and add shredded cheese on top.

Return the dish to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and browned.

Check the onions after 20 minutes of the first bake to see if they are to your liking; they can be cooked longer for more tenderness.
