Traditional Shabbat Challah
Cultural Context
Challah is a traditional Jewish bread, often braided and served during Shabbat and holidays. Its origins trace back to ancient Jewish practices, symbolizing the manna that fell from heaven. The bread represents unity and family, making it a staple at festive meals. Today, variations abound, with flavors ranging from sweet to savory, enjoyed by many beyond the Jewish community.

all-purpose flour

Mix warm water and yeast in a bowl until foamy, about 5 minutes.
Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Add the yeast mixture, eggs, honey, and oil to the dry ingredients.
Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 10 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1-2 hours.
Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a long strand, about 12 inches long.
Braid the three strands together to form the loaf.
Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cover the loaf and let it rise again until puffy, about 30-45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Brush the loaf with beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
