Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar

Cultural Context

Apple cider vinegar has roots in early American households, where it was made from leftover apple scraps. It became a staple for its versatility in cooking and preservation. Today, it's celebrated for its potential health benefits and is used in dressings, marinades, and as a natural remedy. Its popularity has led to numerous commercial varieties, but homemade versions are cherished for their freshness and simplicity.

💰Cheaper: brown sugar

Honey adds flavor while brown sugar is more economical.

1

Fill a jar three-quarters full with apple scraps.

2

Remove any woody bits from the apple scraps before filling the jar.

3

Add water to the jar until full, which takes about 5.5 cups.

4

For every cup of water, add 1 tablespoon of sugar; since it took 5.5 cups, add 5.5 tablespoons of sugar.

5

Shake or stir the jar to incorporate the sugar (it doesn't need to be completely dissolved).

6

Use pickle pebbles to hold down the apple bits and keep the mixture debris-free.

7

Place the lid on the jar without screwing it on tightly.

8

Store the jar in a dark spot in the pantry for four weeks, undisturbed.

9

Optionally, shake the jar occasionally, but it's not necessary.

10

After two weeks, strain out the apple bits and return the juice to the jar without the pickle pebbles.

11

Let the mixture sit for an additional two weeks to develop the vinegar taste.
