Rinse the barley mixture in a strainer.

Place beef and onions in a 5 qt. Cast Iron Stock Pot and brown over medium heat.

Cook gently until onions are transparent, stirring often to avoid uneven cooking.

When the onion and beef mixture is ready, add seasoning mix, tomatoes, barley/lentil mixture, and water to the pan.

Stir thoroughly.

Bring to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer and cover for 1 hour.

Stir occasionally to avoid scorching and add water if necessary. Soup can be thinned with water if too thick.
