Add 1 and 1/2 cups of water to a bowl and check the temperature to be between 105 and 110°F.
Add 4 and 1/2 teaspoons of dry active yeast to the water and 1 cup of milk without proofing the yeast for 10 minutes.
Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of salt to the mixture.
Spoon 6 cups of flour into measuring cups and level it off without packing it in.
Let the dough sit for 10 minutes for the flour to hydrate, then mix well.
Slice the 6 tablespoons of softened butter into pieces and add to the mixture.
Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until it comes clean off the sides of the bowl.
If the dough is too sticky, add flour a tablespoon at a time until it comes clean from the sides.
Plop the kneaded dough into a well-greased bowl and cover it to keep dust out.
Set a timer for about 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size; it may take longer depending on circumstances.
Flour the surface and weigh the dough to 1 lb 5 oz for the loaf, shaping the remaining into hamburger rolls weighing 3 oz each.
Shape the dough into a rectangle, roll it up, and pinch the ends to seal.
Place the shaped loaf into a greased 8x4 cast iron bread pan and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Bake the loaf for 35 minutes and hamburger rolls for 22 to 25 minutes.
After baking, let the bread sit in the pan for 5 minutes before removing it.
