Add flour to a large bowl and make a well in the center.
Add sugar and salt around the well.
Warm water in the microwave and add active dry yeast and the separated sugar to it. Mix well with a fork.
Let the yeast mixture sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
Add the yeast mixture into the well of dry ingredients.
Using a dough whisk or fork, mix wet and dry ingredients together until cohesive.
Add vegetable oil and mix until absorbed.
Knead the dough with hands for 10 minutes, adding flour if it sticks.
Place the dough back in the bowl, drizzle with 1 tablespoon of oil, and coat the dough.
Cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap and let rise for 2 hours in a draft-free spot.
After 2 hours, punch down the dough 4-5 times to release gases.
Lightly flour the work area and turn the dough out onto the counter.
Shape the dough into a ball and roll it out into a large oval.
Spread apple butter evenly over the rolled-out dough using the back of a spoon.
Gently roll the dough over itself to form a rope with the apple butter inside.
Sprinkle flour on the work area to prevent sticking while coiling the dough into a spiral.
Twist the rolled dough and then shape it into a spiral, tucking the end underneath.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with nonstick spray.
Place the challah on the prepared parchment and cover with plastic wrap to rise for 45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit with a rack in the center.
In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon for the crumble.
Add vegetable oil to the crumble mixture and mix with a fork until it resembles small pebbles.
Beat an egg with a touch of water for the egg wash.
Uncover the challah and apply a thorough egg wash to ensure even browning.
