In a bowl, mix warm water and sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and egg to the flour mixture.
Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions for buns.
Shape each portion into a ball and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cover the shaped buns with a cloth and let them rise again until doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Brush the tops of the buns with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
