Cultural Context

Turmeric, native to Southeast Asia, has been used in Indian cuisine and traditional medicine for thousands of years. Known for its vibrant yellow color and earthy flavor, turmeric is a staple in curries and is celebrated for its anti-inflammatory properties. Today, turmeric is widely recognized globally, often found in health supplements and as a natural coloring agent in various dishes.

1

Take 1 kg of turmeric root.

2

Sun dry the turmeric for one day.

3

After a day, check that the turmeric has dried well and can be broken easily.

4

Using a mortar and pestle, break the turmeric into small pieces for easier grinding.

5

Transfer the broken turmeric into a medium-sized mixy jar for grinding.

6

Grind the turmeric into a smooth powder, but do not grind all together.

7

Sieve the ground turmeric powder to ensure smoothness.

8

Transfer the residue into another bowl and grind it again in a smaller mixy jar until smooth.

9

Sieve this second batch of ground turmeric powder as well.

10

The residue that cannot be ground further can be used for medicinal purposes as an antiseptic.

11

Store the homemade turmeric powder separately for ekadashi in an airtight container, away from other regular masalas.

12

Note that 1 kg of whole turmeric yields 850 to 900 grams of turmeric powder.
