Preheat the oven to 450°F.
In a bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Mix well.
Add 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese and 1 cup of diced ham to the dry ingredients.
In a separate bowl, prepare the buttermilk mixture by combining 1 cup of sour cream and 1 cup of 2% milk (or use 2 cups of buttermilk).
Pour the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until combined. The mixture will be a little lumpy.
Melt 1/2 stick of butter and add it to the mixture, ensuring it is well incorporated.
Spray a square pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Spoon the batter into the prepared pan, flattening it out as needed.
Cut the batter into 9 pieces in the pan before baking.
Drizzle the remaining melted butter over the top of the batter.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
