Homemade Tater Tots

Cultural Context

Tater tots originated in the United States in the 1950s, created by the Ore-Ida company as a way to use leftover potato scraps. They quickly became a popular snack and side dish, especially in school cafeterias and fast-food restaurants. Today, homemade tater tots are cherished for their crispy exterior and fluffy interior, often served as a comfort food or party appetizer, with various dipping sauces.

2 medium-to-large baking potatoes
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
black pepper
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 ounce shredded cheese (sharp cheddar)
vegetable oil
parsley (optional)

all-purpose flour

🥗Healthier: whole wheat flour

💰Cheaper: cornmeal

Whole wheat flour adds fiber while cornstarch can help bind the mixture.

vegetable oil

💰Cheaper: sunflower oil

1

Peel and cut the potatoes into small chunks.

2

Agitate the potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 10 to 15 seconds to remove some starch.

3

Drain the potatoes and place half into a food processor, pulse until broken down into rough 1/4 to 1/8 inch pieces.

4

Transfer the processed potatoes to a clean dish towel and repeat with the remaining potatoes.

5

Wrap the dish towel around the processed potatoes and squeeze to remove as much liquid as possible.

6

Shake the potatoes into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute, stir, then microwave for another 30 seconds.

7

Let the potatoes cool for 3 to 4 minutes.

8

Chop parsley and add it to the potatoes along with salt, onion powder, black pepper, cornstarch, and shredded cheese.

9

Gently mix to combine.

10

Drizzle oil on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

11

Shape the mixture into cylinders about 3/4-inch wide and 1-inch long.

12

Drizzle the tops of tater tots with remaining oil.

13

Bake in a 400-degree F oven until golden brown on the bottom, about 12 minutes.

14

Flip each tater tot and bake until the second side is golden brown, another 12 to 15 minutes.

15

Optionally, air fry at 375 to 390 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
