Wash the sweet potatoes and yams until clean.
Place the sweet potatoes and yams on a cookie sheet and cut off the ends to prevent them from exploding during cooking.
Bake the sweet potatoes and yams at 350°F for about 45 minutes, checking for doneness with a fork.
Once soft, peel the sweet potatoes and yams and cut them into about 1-inch thick slices.
Layer the sweet potatoes and yams back and forth in a casserole dish for a colorful presentation.
In a saucepan, add butter and brown sugar, stirring constantly until it reaches a thick boil.
Add 1/4 cup of milk to the mixture and continue stirring over high heat until it thickens.
Remove from heat and add 2 cups of powdered sugar, stirring until well combined and thick.
Pour the sauce evenly over the layered sweet potatoes and yams.
If desired, add nuts on top of the mixture.
Bake the casserole at 350°F for about 20 minutes to caramelize and make it bubbly.
