Cultural Context

Irish Soda Bread has its roots in 19th-century Ireland, where it was a staple for families due to its simplicity and quick preparation. Traditionally made with just four ingredients, it symbolizes the resourcefulness of Irish cooking. Today, it is enjoyed worldwide, often served alongside hearty soups or stews, and has inspired numerous variations with added ingredients like raisins or nuts.

🥗Healthier: whole wheat flour

💰Cheaper: bread flour

Whole wheat flour increases fiber content, while bread flour can be cheaper.

1

Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).

2

In a large bowl, combine 450 grams of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

3

Mix the dry ingredients well to ensure the baking soda is evenly distributed.

4

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.

5

Pour in about 14 fluid ounces of buttermilk into the well.

6

Stir in a full circular motion from the center to the outside until a dough forms.

7

Sprinkle flour generously on the work surface.

8

Turn the dough out onto the floured surface and tidy it up without kneading.

9

Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.

10

Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf.

11

Prick the corners of the loaf to let the fairies out.

12

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

13

Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
