Assemble the casserole by stacking the sliced potatoes in the dish, ensuring some edges jut out for crispiness.
Taste the cream mixture for seasoning and adjust salt if necessary.
Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated 400°F oven for about 30 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes to allow the top to crisp up.
Add the reserved cheese on top and bake for another 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
