Maraschino Cherries

Cultural Context

Maraschino cherries have their roots in the Italian marasca cherry, preserved in liqueur. They became popular in the U.S. in the 19th century, often used as a cocktail garnish or dessert topping. Today, they are a staple in ice cream sundaes and cocktails, loved for their vibrant color and sweet flavor, though many modern versions are artificially colored and flavored. They continue to be a festive addition to drinks and desserts, embodying a sense of nostalgia and celebration.
