The cross symbolizes the crucifixion, while the spices represent the spices used to embalm Christ. Today, these sweet, spiced buns are popular year-round, often enjoyed toasted with butter, and have inspired variations worldwide, including chocolate and fruit-filled versions.

Activate yeast by mixing 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast with 1/2 cup of warm water and some sugar, then set aside.
Heat 6 ounces of coconut milk in the microwave for 1 minute.
In a large bowl, combine 4 and 3/4 cups of flour, 1/2 cup plus 6 tablespoons of sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon.
Add 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of butter to the flour mixture and mix well.
Add the activated yeast mixture and warm coconut milk to the dry ingredients.
Gradually mix in 2 cups of warm water until a sticky dough forms.
Knead the dough until smooth, about 6-8 minutes.
Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
Shape the dough into mini loaves and place them on a baking tray.
Allow the shaped buns to rise for another 30 minutes before baking.
