Red pepper flakes provide heat at a lower cost.
In a small pan, add 1 cup of homemade ketchup.
Thin out 1 tbsp of mustard with 1 tbsp of water and add it to the pan.
Add 2 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce to the mixture.
Stir in 2 tbsp of brown sugar and mix well.
Add 1/2 tsp of onion powder and 1/2 tsp of garlic powder.
Incorporate up to 1 tsp of ground pepper, adjusting to taste.
Mix in 2 tbsp of molasses and stir until combined.
Slowly add in 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar and mix.
Optionally, add 1 to 2 tbsp of Kentucky bourbon.
Turn the heat to medium-low and stir continuously until bubbling.
Once bubbling, set a timer for 2 minutes while stirring.
Turn heat to low, cover, and cook for 10 to 30 minutes until thickened.
Every 5 minutes, stir the sauce and check consistency.
After cooking, let cool and transfer to a heat-proof container.
