Vegan Hawaiian Rolls

Cultural Context

Vegan Hawaiian Rolls are inspired by the traditional sweet rolls of Hawaii, known for their soft texture and tropical flavors. These rolls often accompany meals and are enjoyed during gatherings and celebrations. The vegan version maintains the essence of the original while catering to plant-based diets, making them a delightful treat for everyone.

1 package active dry yeast (1/4 ounce)
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup vegan butter
1 cup pineapple juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
1 and 1/4 teaspoons salt
3 and 3/4 cups flour
cooking spray
2 tablespoons vegan butter (for topping)
2 tablespoons pineapple juice (for topping)
1

Pour 3/4 cup of warm water (about 110°F) into a bowl.

2

Add 1 package (1/4 ounce) of active dry yeast to the warm water.

3

Stir in 1 tablespoon of sugar and let sit for about 10 minutes.

4

In a saucepan, warm 1/4 cup of vegan butter and 1 cup of pineapple juice to about 110°F.

5

Let the mixture cool down to 110°F before adding it to the yeast.

6

Add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the yeast mixture.

7

Add 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 and 1/4 teaspoons of salt to the mixture.

8

Mix the ingredients together.

9

Gradually add 3 and 3/4 cups of flour to the mixture and mix until combined.

10

Knead the dough in the mixer on low speed for about 10 minutes.

11

Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and spray the top with cooking spray.

12

Cover the bowl with Saran wrap and let it sit in a dark cool place for about 1 hour.

13

After 1 hour, check the dough; if it hasn't risen much, punch it down twice with sprayed hands.

14

Cover the dough again and let it rise for another hour in a dark place.

15

After the second rise, heavily grease a 9x3 pan.

16

Punch the dough down two more times.

17

Lightly flour a countertop and separate the dough into 15 equal pieces.

18

Cover the pieces with Saran wrap to prevent drying out while working with one piece.

19

Roll each piece into a ball and place them in the greased pan.

20

In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of vegan butter and 2 tablespoons of pineapple juice on low heat.

21

Preheat the oven to 375°F.

22

Once melted, pour the pineapple butter mixture over the rolls in the pan.
